वसु mfn. 1.mf(उ or वी)n. (for 2. See p. 932, col. 3) excellent, good, beneficent, [RV.] ; [GṛŚrS.] sweet, [L.] dry, [L.] N. of the gods (as the ‘good or bright ones’, esp. of the आदित्यs, मरुत्s, अश्विन्s, इन्द्र, उषस्, रुद्र, वायु, विष्णु, शिव, and कुबेर), [RV.] ; [AV.] ; [MBh.] ; [R.] अप् of a partic. class of gods (whose number is usually eight, and whose chief is इन्द्र, later अग्नि and विष्णु; they form one of the nine गणs or classes enumerated under गण-देवताq.v. ; the eight वसुs were originally personifications, like other Vedic deities, of natural phenomena, and are usually mentioned with the other गणs common in the वेद, viz. the eleven रुद्रs and the twelve आदित्यs, constituting with them and with द्यौस्, ‘Heaven’, and पृथिवी, ‘Earth’ [or, according to some, with इन्द्र and प्रजा-पति, or, according to others, with the two अश्विन्s], the thirty-three gods to which reference is frequently made; the names of the वसुs, according to the विष्णु-पुराण, are, 1. आप [connected with , ‘water’]; 2. ध्रुव, ‘the Pole-star’; 3. सोम, ‘the Moon’; 4. धव or धर; 5. अनिल, ‘Wind’; 6. अनल or पावक, ‘Fire’; 7. प्रत्यूष, ‘the Dawn’; 8. प्रभास, ‘Light’; but their names are variously given; अहन्, ‘Day’, being sometimes substituted for 1; in their relationship to Fire and Light they appear to belong to Vedic rather than Purānic mythology), [RV.] &c. &c. a symbolical N. of the number ‘eight’ [VarBṛS.] a ray of light, [Naigh. i, 15] a partic. ray of light, [VP.] जिन = , [Śīl.] (only [L.] the sun; the moon; fire; a rope, thong; a tree; N. of two kinds of plant = बक and पीत-मद्गु; a lake, pond; a kind of fish; the tie of the yoke of a plough; the distance from the elbow to the closed fist) N. of a ऋषि (with the patr. भरद्-वाज, author of [RV. ix, 80-82] , reckoned among the seven sages), [Hariv.] of a son of मनु, ib. of a son of उत्तान-पाद, ib. of a prince of the चेदिs also called उपरि-चर, [MBh.] of a son of ईलिन, ib. of a son of कुश and the country called after him, [RV.] of a son of वसु-देव, [BhP.] of a son of कृष्ण, ib. of a son of वत्सर, ib. of a son of हिरण्य-रेतस् and the वर्ष ruled by him, ib. of a son of भूतज्योतिस्, ib. of a son of नरक, ib. of a king of कश्मीर, [Cat.] वसु f.
