A Sanskrit English Dictionary | Sanskrit  English
वेणी—संहार  m. m. ‘binding up of the braided hair’ N. of a well-known drama by भट्ट-नारायण (who probably lived in the 9th century; its subject is taken from an incident narrated in the 2nd and 8th books of the महा-भारत, in which is described how युधिष्ठिर gambled away all his possessions, including द्रौपदी, and how दुः-शासन then insulted द्रौपदी by loosening her braided hair and dragging her away by her dishevelled locks, and how भीम, who witnessed the insult, swore that he would one day kill दुः-शासन and drink his blood; this threat he fulfilled, and द्रौपदी's hair was then bound up again; cf.[MBh. ii, 2229-2235, viii, 4235] ).
