da or dakāra m This letter or word appears at the head of epistles from a Shúdra to a Bráhman. It is to stand for दंडवत Salutation or obeisance. The return-letter, in epistles from a Bráhman to a Shúdra is आ, standing for आशीर्वाद Benediction. d d The eighteenth consonant, and the third of the dental class. It is sounded yet more softly than D in dupe, duly. The sound must be acquired by the ear. See the notice under त. That gives, a donor, a giver. In comp. as सुखद, दुःखद, मोक्षद, हर्षद, शोकद, धनद, मानद Pleasure-giving, pain-giving &c.
