RĀHU   An Asura.
1) Birth.
Son of Kaśyapaprajāpati by his wife Siṁhikā. [Ādi Parva. Chapter 65, Verse 31] .
2) Rāhu and the Solar eclipse.
The oldest story about Rāhu is that about the solar eclipse. (See under Candra IV, Para 4).
3) Other information.
(i) Rāhu is a member of Brahmā's court. [Sabhā Parva Chapter 11, Verse 29] .
(ii) Sañjaya once spoke to Dhṛtarāṣṭra about Rāhu. [Bhīṣma Parva, Chapter 12, Verse 40] .
(iii) Rāhu exists 10,000 yojanas below the Sun. [Bhāgavata, 5th Skandha] .
(iv) Rāhu is installed in temples as wearing a half-moon on his head. [Agni Purāṇa, Chapter 51] .

राहु n.  एक दानव, जो अष्टग्रहों में से एक पापग्रह माना जाता है । सूर्य को ग्रसित करनेवाल दानव के रूप में इसका निर्देश अथर्ववेद में प्राप्त है [अ. वे. १९.९-१०] । पुराणों में इसे कश्यप एवं दनु का पुत्र बताया गया है । अन्य ग्रंथों में से इसे कश्यप एवं सिंहिका का पुत्र कहा गया है [म. आ. ५९.३०] ; [विष्णुधर्म. १.१०६] ; [पद्म. सृ. ४०] । भागवत एवं ब्रह्मांड में इसे विप्रचित्ति एवं सिंहिका का पुत्र कहा गया है [भा. ६.६.३७, १८.१३] ; [ब्रह्मांड.३.६.१८.२०] । स्वर्भानु नामक एक आसुर प्राणिका निर्देश ऋग्वेद में प्राप्त है, जिसे सूर्य के प्रकाश को रोंकनेवाला माना गया है [ऋ. ५.४०] ; स्वर्भानु देखिये । बैदिक साहित्य में निर्दिष्ट स्वर्भानु का स्थान ही वैदिकोत्तर पुराणकथाशास्त्र में राहु के द्वारा लिया गया है, जिस कारण इसे ‘चंद्रार्कप्रंदन’ (चंद्र एवं सूर्य को जीतनेवाला) कहा गया है [भा. ५.२३.७] । कई पुराणों में इसका नामान्तर स्वर्भानु बताया गया है [ब्रह्मांड. ३.६.२३] । शिशुमार चक्र के गले में इसका निवासस्थान था ।
राहु n.  समुद्रमंथन के उपरान्त देव-गण अमृतपान करने लगा, जब यह दानव भी प्रच्छन्न रूप धारण कर अमृतपान में शामिल हुआ । अमृत इसके गलें तक ही पहुँच पाया था कि, सूर्यचंद्र ने यह दैत्य होने की सूचना विष्णु को दी । विष्णु ने तत्काल इसका शिरच्छेद किया, जिससे इसका सिर बदन से अलग हो कर धरती पर जा गिरा [म. आ. १७.४.६] । पश्वात् इसके सिर से केतु का निर्माण हुआ. एवं यह सिरविरहित अवस्था में घूमने लगा । तदोपरान्त विष्णु की डर से ये दोनों भाग गयें । किन्तु सूर्य एवं चंद्रमा के प्रति राहु-केतुका द्वेष कम न हुआ । इसी कारण, ये आज भी उन्हे ग्रासते रहते हैं, जिसे क्रमश: सूर्यग्रहण एवं चंद्रग्रहण कहते हैं [पद्म. ब्र. १०] । राहु ग्रह का आकार वृत्ताकार माना जाता है । इसका व्यास बारह हजार योजन, तथा दायरा बयालिस हजार योजन है । जिस समय शंकर एवं जालंधर का युद्ध था, उस समय यह जालंधर की ओर से राजदूत बन कर शंकर के पास गया था [पद्म. उ. १०] । किन्तु वहाँ शंकर की क्रोधाग्नी से डर कर यह भाग गया [पद्म. उ. १९] । इस पापग्रह के प्रभाव की जानकारी संजय ने धृतराष्ट्र को बताई थी [म. स. १३.३९-४१] । ब्रह्मा की सभा में उपस्थित ग्रहों में भी इसका नाम प्राप्त है । इसकी कन्या का नाम सुप्रभा था [पद्म. सृ. ६] . जिसे भागवत में स्वर्भानुपुत्री कहा गया है । कई अन्य पुराणों में इसकी कन्या का नाम प्रभा दिया गया है [ब्रह्मांड. ३.६२३] ; [विष्णु. १.२१] ।

राहु  m.  m. ( fr. √ रभ्; cf. ग्रह and √ ग्रह्) ‘the Seizer’, N. of a दैत्य or demon who is supposed to seize the sun and moon and thus cause eclipses (he is fabled as a son of विप्र-चित्ति and सिंहिका and as having a dragon's tail; when the gods had churned the ocean for the अमृत or nectar of immortality, he disguised himself like one of them and drank a portion; but the Sun and Moon revealed the fraud to विष्णु, who cut off राहु's head, which thereupon became fixed in the stellar sphere, and having become immortal through drinking the अमृत, has ever since wreaked its vengeance on the Sun and Moon by occasionally swallowing them; while at the same time the tail of the demon became केतु [q.v.] and gave birth to a numerous progeny of comets and fiery meteors; in astron. राहु is variously regarded as a dragon's head, as the ascending node of the moon [or point where the moon intersects the ecliptic in passing northwards], as one of the planets [ cf. ग्रह], and as the regent of the south-west quarter [ [Laghuj.]] ; among Buddhists many demons are called राहु), [AV.] &c. &c.

[When the nectar, that was churned out of the ocean, was being served to the gods, Rāhu disguised himself and attempted to drink it along with them. But he was detected by the sun and the moon who informed Viṣṇu of the fraud. Visnu, thereupon, severed his head from the body; but as he had tasted a little quantity of nectar the head became immortal, and is supposed to wreak its vengeance on the sun and moon at the time of conjunction and opposition; cf. राहु  m.  ( -हुः) The ascending node; in mythology, the son of VIPRACHITTI by SINHIKĀ, a Daitya, with the tail of a dragon, whose head was severed from his body by VISHṆU, on the information of the sun and the moon who caught him in the act of drinking Amrita which was being served to gods, but being immortal by tasting it, his head and tail retained their separate existence, and being transferred [Page605-a+ 60] to the stellar sphere, became the authors of eclipses; the first especially, by endeavouring at various times to swallow the sun and the moon to wreak his vengeance.
