षट्कर्मन्

षट्—कर्मन्  n. n. the six duties of Brāhmans (viz.अध्ययन, ‘studying or repeating the वेद’, अध्यापन, ‘teaching the ’, यजन ‘offering sacrifices’, याजन, ‘conducting them for others’, दान, ‘giving’, and प्रतिग्रह, ‘accepting gifts’), [ŚāṅkhGṛ.] ; [Mn.] &c. (the six daily duties accord. to the later law-books, are, स्नान, ‘religious bathing’, संध्याजप, ‘repetition of prayers at the three संध्याs’, ब्रह्म-यज्ञ, ‘worship of the Supreme Being by repeating the first words of sacred books’, तर्पण, ‘daily oblations of water to the gods, sages, and पितृs’, होम, ‘oblations of fuel, rice &c. to fire’, देव-पूजा, ‘worship of the secondary gods either in the domestic sanctuary or in temples’), [Parāś.] ; [RTL. 394]

ऋत   six acts any one of which is allowable to a Brāhman householder as a means of subsistence (viz., ‘gleaning’, अमृत, ‘unsolicited alms’, मृत, ‘solicited alms’, कर्षण, ‘agriculture’, सत्या-नृत, ‘commerce or trade’, श्व-वृत्ति, ‘servitude’, the last being condemned), [Mn. iv, 4, 5, 6, 9]
धौती   six acts belonging to the practice of योग (viz., वस्ती, नेती, त्राटक, नौलिक, कपाल-भाती, these consist of suppressions of the breath and self-mortifications of various kinds), [Cat.]
शान्ति   six acts for inflicting various kinds of injury on enemies (viz., वश्य, स्तम्भन, विद्वेष, उच्चाटन, मारण, q.v.; these acts consist in repeating certain magical spells and texts taught in the तन्त्रs), ib.
षट्—कर्मन्  m. m. a performer of the above six acts, a Brāhman who is an adept in the तन्त्र magical formularies, [Mn.] ; [MBh.]
