संयम्

सं-√ यम्   P.-यच्छति√ (rarely Ā.), to hold together, hold in, hold fast, restrain, curb, suppress, control, govern, guide (horses, the senses, passions), [RV.] &c. &c.;
to tie up, bind together (hair or a garment), [MBh.] ; [Kāv.] &c.;
to put together, heap up (Ā. ‘for one's self’), [Pāṇ. 1-3, 75] Sch.;
to shut up, close (a door), [Bhag.] ;
to press close to or against, [Suśr.] ;
to present with, give to (Ā. with instr. of person, when the action is permitted P. with dat., when the action is not permitted), [Pāṇ. 1-3, 35] :
Caus.-यमयति (cf.-यमित), to cause to restrain &c.;
to bind up (the hair), [Veṇīs.]

संयम्

To restrain, curb, check, control, govern, subdue (Ātm.) as passions &c.); असंयतात्मनो योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मतिः [Bg.6.36;] [Ms.2.1.]
To bind, imprison, fasten, confine; वानरं मा न संयसीः [Bk.9.5;] [M.1.7;] [R.3.2,42.]
To gather (Ātm.); व्रीहीन् संयच्छते [Sk.]
To shut, close; सर्वद्वाराणि संयभ्य मनो हृदि निरुध्य च [Bg. 8.12.]
