DĪNANĀTHA   A King who lived in Dvāpara Age. He was a mighty and famous Vaiṣṇava. But his childless life distressed him very much. Once he consulted Gālava about his plight. Gālava assured him that if he performed a human sacrifice, a son would be born to him. A handsome, scholarly and highly-born man was to be sacrificed into the fire, A cripple, a dark-skinned man or a crude fellow was unsuitable for the purpose. The King's servants scoured the villages and towns looking for such a perfect man, but in vain. At last they reached a country called Daśapura, inhabited by noble Brāhmaṇas. The women of that place were reputed for their charming eyes. No man could resist their fascination. In that lovely city there lived a Brāhmaṇa named Kṛṣṇadeva with his virtuous wife and three sons. The King's servants requested Kṛṣṇadeva to give one of his sons to be sacrificed. They offered four lakhs of gold coins as price. The Brāhmaṇa and his wife cried bitterly and Kṛṣṇadeva offered himself instead of his sons. The royal servants seized one of his sons after throwing gold coins in the house and prepared to take him away. At this stage the second son of Kṛṣṇadeva came forward and volunteered himself. They agreed and he accompanied them to the palace. On their way they met the sage Viśvāmitra. He asked them to release the boy but they refused to set him free. The sage followed them to the palace and undertook to perform a sacrifice which would bless the King with progeny without a human sacrifice. The King accepted the offer and thus the boy was saved. प्राचीन चरित्रकोश

दीननाथ n.  एक विष्णु भक्त राजा । यह द्वापर युग में पैदा हुआ । इसे संतान न थी । पुत्रप्राप्ति के लिये इसने गालव ऋषि की सलाह ने, नरयज्ञ करने का निश्चय किया । योग्य मनुष्यों को ढूँढे लाने के लिये इसने दूत नियुक्त किये । इन दूतों को, दशपुर नगरी के कृष्णदेव ब्राह्मण के सुशीला से उत्पन्न तीन पुत्र, योग्य दिखाई पडे । ब्राह्मण एक भी पुत्र देने के लिये तयार नही था । चार लाख मुहरे दे कर, दूत जबरदस्ती उसका ज्येष्ठ पुत्र ले जाने लगे । ब्राह्मण ने प्रार्थन की ‘उसे छोड दो । मैं स्वयं आ रहा हूँ’। पश्चात् ब्राह्मण के छोटे पुत्र को ले जाने की कोशिश दूतों ने की, तो माता ने उन्हे रोक लिया तब मँझले पुत्र वे जबरन ले गये । मातापिता ने अत्याधिक शोक किया । बाद में सेवकों का पडाव विश्वामित्र के आश्रम में पडा । तब विश्वामित्र ने ब्राह्मण के मँझले पुत्र के बदले, खुद को नरमेध के लिये बलि के रुप में प्रस्तुत किया । परंतु नौकरों ने वह मान्य नहीं किया । पश्चात् विश्वामित्र राजा के पास आया । विश्वामित्र ने राजा से कहा, ‘पूर्णाहुति दे कर भी पुत्रप्राप्ति हो सकती है’। यह सुनते ही उस पुत्र को छोड कर, राजा ने यज्ञ किया । उस ब्राह्मणपुत्र के जान बचाने के पुण्य से, विश्वामित्र को स्वर्गप्राप्ति, तथा दीननाथ को पुत्रप्राप्ति हुई [पद्म. ब्र.१२] ; शुनः-- शेप देखिये ।
