VIŚĀKHA I   One of the three brothers of Skandadeva. The other two were Śākha and Naigameya. There is a story regarding them in [Mahābhārata, Śānti Parva] , as follows:-- Skandadeva approached his father Śiva. At that time Śiva, Pārvatī, Agni and Gaṅgā, all wished in their minds that Skanda should come to him or her. Understanding the desire of each, by Yogabala (the power obtained by union with the Universal Soul) Skanda divided himself into four persons, Skanda, Viśākha, Śākha and Naigameya and went to each of them respectively and fulfilled their desire. VIŚĀKHA II   A hermit. Mention is made in [M.B. Sabhā Parva, Chapter 7, Stanza 19] , that this hermit stays in the palace of Indra, glorifying him.

विशाख n.  इंद्रसभा का एक ऋषि [म. स. ७.१२] ।
विशाख II. n.  (सो. पुरूरवस्.) एक राजा, जो आयु राजा का पुत्र था [पद्म. सृ. १२] ।
विशाख III. n.  स्कंद के तीन छोटे भाईयों में से एक । इसके अन्य दो भाईयों के नाम शाख एवं नैगमेय थे । इसके जन्म के संबंध में एक चमत्कृतिपूर्ण कथा महाभारत में प्राप्त है । एक बार स्कंद अपने पिता शिव से मिलने जा रहा था । उस समय, शिव, पार्वती, अग्नि एवं गंगा चारों ही एकसाथ मन ही मन सोचने लगे कि, स्कंद उनके पास रहने आये तो अच्छा होगा। उनके मनोभाव को समझ कर, स्कंद ने योगबल से अपने स्कंद, विशाख, शाख एवं नैगमेय नामक चार रूप बना दिये, जो क्रमशः शिव, पार्वती, अग्नि एवं गंगा के पास रहने लगे। स्कंद से उत्पन्न होने के कारण, ये परस्पर अभिन्न माने जाते है [म. श. ४४.३४] ।
विशाख IV. n.  स्कंद का एक रूप। एक समय इंद्र ने स्कंद पर वज्र का प्रहार किया, जिस कारण उसकी दायी पँसली पर गहरी चोट लगी। इस चोट में से स्कंद का एक नया रूप प्रकट हुआ, जिसकी युवावस्था थी । उसने सुवर्णमय कवच धारण किया था, एवं उसके हाथ में एक शक्ति थी । वज्र के घाव से उसकी उत्पत्ति होने के कारण, उसे ‘विशाख’ नाम प्राप्त हुआ।
