MEASURE , s.मानं, प्रमाणं, परिमाणं, मात्रं, योतुःm., यौतवं, पौतवं, द्रुवयं,पाय्यं; ‘of short measure,’ अल्पप्रमाणः -णा -णं; ‘measure of capacity,’ प्रतीमाणं, प्रस्थः; ‘of weight,’ तुलामानं; ‘of length,’ अङ्गुलिमानं; ‘of time,’ कालपरिमाणं. The following are some of the measures of capacity: मुष्टिःm. = a handful, कुञ्जिःf. = 8 handfuls, कुडवः = 12 handfuls, प्रस्थः = 48 handfuls or 4 kudavas, आढकः = 4 prasthas, द्रोणः = 4 ādhakas, खारी = 16 dronas, कुम्भः = 20 dronas, वाहः = 10 kumbhas, निकुञ्चकः = (1/4) of a kudava, गोष्पदं = the measure of a cow's foot. The following are measures of weight: रक्तिका or रतिः = 2(1/4) grains, गुञ्जा = 2(3/16) grains, or (1/8) of a māṣa, काकिणी = (1/4) of a māṣa, माषः = 17 grains, पलं = 2 māṣas, धरणः -णं = 10 palas, कर्षः or अक्षः = 16 māṣas or 280 grains troy, तोलः = 210 grains, तुला = 100 palas or 145 ounces troy, भारः = 2000 palas, आचितं = 10 bhāras. The following are mea- sures of length: यवः = 1 barley-corn, अङ्गुलः = 8 barley- corns, प्रादेशः = 10 angulas or the span of the thumb and forefinger, वितस्तिःf. or गोकर्णः = 12 angulas or the span of the thumb and little finger, रत्निः -त्नीm. = 18 angulas or a cubit measured from the elbow to the end of the closed fist, अरत्निःm. = 21 angulas or a cubit measured from the elbow to the tip of the little finger, हस्तः = 24 angulas or a cubit measured from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, गजः = 2 cubits or between 2 and 3 feet, व्यामः = a fathom or 3(1/2) hastas or the space between the tips of the fingers of either hand when the arms are extended, काकिणी = (1/4) of a danda, दण्डः = a pole or 4 cubits, निवर्त्तनं = 200 square cubits or 20 rods, गोचर्म्मn. = a hide of land 300 feet long by 10 broad, क्रोशः = a kos or 4000 cubits, गव्यूतिःm. or गव्यूतं = 2 kos or 2000 dandas or 8000 cubits, योजनं = 4 kos. The following are measures of time, निमेषः or निमिषः = a twinkling of the eye, काष्ठा = 18 twinklings, कला = 30 kaṣthās or 8 seconds, क्षणः = 30 kalās or 4 minutes, दण्डः or घटिका = 6 kshanas or the 60th part of a day or 24 minutes, मुहूर्त्तः -र्त्तं = 12 kshanas or the 30th part of a day or 48 minutes, अहोरात्रः = a day or 30 muhūrtas, पक्षः = 15 days, पलं, विपलं, and त्रुटिः are short measures of time, equal to about a minute. —
(Rule, standard by which any thing is measured) परिमाणं, प्रमाणं. —
(Proportion) मानं, परिमाणं, प्रमाणं, मितिःf., परिमितिः, तारतम्यं;‘according to measure,’ प्रमाणतस्. —
(Portion allotted) भागः,विभागः, अंशः. —
(Degree) प्रमाणं, परिमाणं, पर्य्यन्तं, मात्रं; ‘in some measure,’ किञ्चित्, अल्पमात्रं, ईषत्. —
(Limit) पर्य्यन्तं, अन्तः-न्तं, मर्य्यादा, सीमा; ‘beyond measure,’ अतिमात्रं, अतिमर्य्यादं,नितान्तं, अतिशयेन, अतीव, अति prefixed. —
(Moderation) परि-मितिःf., परिमितता; ‘in measure,’ परिमितं. — (Quantity, mea- sure of a vowel, &c.) मात्रा. —
(Musical time) तालः, मात्रा;‘in musical measure,’ स्वरबद्धः -द्धा -द्धं. —
(Metre, measure of verse) छन्दः, छन्दस्, वृत्तं, वर्णवृत्तं, वेदः, पद्यं; ‘false measure,’ छन्दोभङ्गः. —
(Means to an end, step) उपायः, उपचारः, साधनं,अभ्युपायः, योगः, प्रयोगः, युक्तिःf., विधानं, क्रिया, कर्म्मn.(न्), कार्य्यं,कारणं, करणं; ‘mild measures,’ सामोपचारः, सौम्योपचारः, सामो-पायः; the four measures of war are ‘causing dissension,’ भेदः; ‘force of arms,’ दण्डः; ‘bribery,’ दानं; ‘conciliation,’ सामn. ( न्); ‘to take measures,’ उपायप्रयोगं कृ. — (Common measure in arithmetic, &c.) अपवर्त्तः; ‘having no common measure,’ निरपवर्त्तः -र्त्ता -र्त्तं.
