सप्तर्षयःm.pl. These are sometimes called Prajapatis, and, as created by Brahma, Brahmarshis or Brahmādikas. Their names are
मरीचिः, अत्रिः, अङ्गिरस्, पुलस्त्यः or
पुलस्तिः, पुलहः, क्रतुः,वशिष्ठः. Some authorities add the names of
भृगुः, दक्षः,कश्यपः नारदः and
प्रचेतस् to the list of Brahmarshis or Prajapatis. According to the Vishnu Purāna there are three kinds of Rishis or saints. 1. Brahmarshis,
ब्रह्मर्षयःm.pl., or saints who are the sons of Brahmā, or Brahmans, such as Marīchi, Atri, Vaśiṣtha, &c., dwelling in the sphere of Brahma 2. Devarshis,
देवर्षयःm.pl., or saints who are also demigods, as Nārada, Nara, Nārāyana, Kardama, &c., dwelling in the region of the gods. 3. Rājarṣis,
राजर्षयःm.pl., royal saints or holy personages who are also kings or men of the military class, and who have at ained to the rank of Rajarshi from the practice of re- ligious austerities. Such were Ikṣvāku, Viśvamitra, son of Gadhi, Purūravas, Dushmanta, &c. Their sphere is the heaven of Indra. Four other classes of Rishis are enumerated in the Amara Kosha, viz. 1. Maharshis,
नहवयःm.pl., or great saints, such as Vyāsa, the arranger of the Vedas. &c. 2. Paramarshis,
परमर्षयःm.pl., or most excellent saints, such as the Muni Bhela, the author of some medical works. 3. Kāndarṣis,
काण्डर्षयःm.pl., or saints and sages who teach a particular kānda or section of the Vedas, as Jaimini, founder of the Pūrva Mīmānsa system, &c. 4. Śrutarṣis,
श्रुतर्षयःm.pl., or inspired saints, as the author of the medical work called suśruta, &c.
