THAN , adv. or conj. Usually expressed in Sanskrit by the abl. c.; as,
‘a store of grain is better than all stores,’ धान्य-संग्रहः श्रेयान् सर्व्वसंग्रहात्;
‘worthier than I,’ अस्मत्तो वरीयान्. Or by न च; as,
‘silence is better than speaking un- truth,’ वरं मौनं न च वचनम् अनृतं [i. e. better silence and not speaking untruth]. In modern Sanskrit
‘than’ is often expressed by अपेक्षया, or अपेक्ष्य; as,
‘some of the organs of animals are stronger than those of men,’ जन्तूनांकानिचिद् इन्द्रियाणि मनुप्यापेक्षया प्रवलानि;
‘acid has a stronger attraction for iron than copper,’ अम्लरसं तास्रम् अपेक्ष्य लोहम्अधिकम् आकर्षति;
‘placing the cup on some place higher than one's head,’ स्वमस्तकम् अपेक्ष्य उच्चतरे स्थाने पात्रं विन्यस्य;
‘than him,’ तदपेक्षया;
‘than me,’ मदपेक्षया.
