यथा वशन्ति देवास् तथेद् असत्   indeed, assuredly (especially, in strengthening an antithesis, e.g., as the gods wish it, thus indeed it will be, [RV. viii, 28, 4] ; दि॑प्सन्त इ॑द् रिप॑वो ना॑-ह देभुः, the enemies wishing indeed to hurt were in nowise able to hurt, [RV. i, 147, 3] ). इद् is often added to words expressing excess or exclusion (e.g.विश्व इत्, every one indeed; शश्वद् इत्, constantly indeed; एक इत्, one only). At the beginning of sentences it often adds emphasis to pronouns, prepositions, particles (e.g.त्वम् इत्, thou indeed; यदि इत्, if indeed, &c.) इद् occurs often in the ऋग्-वेद and अथर्व-वेद, seldom in the ब्राह्मणs, and its place is taken in classical Sanskṛt by एव and other particles.
