एतद्

A Sanskrit English Dictionary | Sanskrit  English
एतद्  mfn. mfn. (Gr. 223; g.सर्वा-दि, [Pāṇ. 1-1, 27] ) this, this here, here (especially as pointing to what is nearest to the speaker e.g.एष बाणः, this arrow here in my hand; एष याति पन्थाः, here passes the way; एष कालः, here i.e. now, is the time; एतद्, this here i.e. this world here below)
एषोऽहम्   sometimes used to give emphasis to the personal pronouns (e.g., I, this very person here) or with omission of those pronouns (e.g.एष त्वां स्वर्गं नयामि, I standing here will convey thee to heaven; एतौ प्रविष्टौ स्वः, we two here have entered)
एतद् एव हि मे धनम्   as the subject of a sentence it agrees in gender and number with the predicate without reference to the noun to be supplied (e.g., for this [scil. cow] is my only wealth, [MBh.] )
एतद् गुरुषु वृत्तिः   but sometimes the neuter sing. remains (e.g., this is the custom among गुरुs, [Mn. ii, 206] )
एतद्   generally refers to what precedes, esp. when connected with इदम्, the latter then referring to what follows (e.g.एष वै प्रथमः कल्पःअनुकल्पस् त्व् अयं ज्ञेयः, this before-mentioned is the principal rule, but this following may be considered a secondary rule, [Mn. iii, 147] )
एष चैव गुरुर् धर्मो यम् प्रवक्ष्याम्य् अहं तव   it refers also to that which follows, esp. when connected with a relative clause (e.g., this is the important law, which I will proclaim to you, [MBh.] ), [RV.] &c. &c.
एतद्  n. ind. in this manner, thus, so, here, at this time, now (e.g.न॑ वा॑ उ एत॑न् म्रियसे, thou dost not die in this manner or by that, [RV. i, 162, 21] ), [AV.] ; [VS.] ; &c.;
एतद्   [cf.Zd.aêta; Old Pers.aita; Armen.aid; Osk. eiso.]

As the subject of a sentence it agrees in gender and number with the predicate without reference to the noun to which it refers; एतद् (शवला) मे धनम्; but may sometimes remain in the neuter; एतदेव गुरुषु वृत्तिः [Ms.2.26.]
It often refers to what precedes, especially when it is joined with इदम् or any other pronoun; एष वै प्रथमः कल्पः [Ms.3.147;] इति यदुक्तं तदेतच्चिन्त्यम्; एतानीमानि, एते ते &c.
It is used in connection with a relative clause, in which case the relative generally follows; प्रच्छन्नवञ्चकास्त्वेते ये स्तेनाटविकादयः [Ms.9.257.] ind. In this manner, thus, so, here, at this time, now. Note: एतद् appears as the first member of compounds which are mostly self-explaining; e. g. ˚अतिरिक्त Besides this. ˚अनन्तर immediately after this; ˚अन्त ending thus; ˚अर्थः this matter; ˚अर्थे on this account, therefore; ˚अवधि to this limit, so far; ˚अवस्थa. of such a state or condition. -Comp.
