( स्वच्छ व अस्वच्छ यांतील औपचारिक भेद दर्शविणारा शब्द .) १ शिजविलेलें . पकविलेलें , किंवा शिजविल्या पकविल्या शिवाय , पाण्याशीं मिसळलेलें ( तांदुळ , भाकरी , पीठ , दुधाशीं किंवा एखाद्या फळांच्या रसाशीं मिसळलें तरी तें खरकटें होत नाहीं .) २ ज्याला असलें खरकटें अन्न लागलें आहे , चिकटलें आहे . अथवा ज्याचा स्पर्श झाला आहे असें ( हात , स्वयंपाकाची भांडीं , जागा , पदार्थ इ० ) खरकट्या अन्नास सोवळ्यानें शिवलें तर चालतें , ओवळ्यानें शिवल्यास तें विटाळतें . ( साधारणत ; बाह्माणांत असा जास्त परिपाठ ) सोवळ्याओवळ्याचा भेद न मानणार्या ब्राह्मणेतरांमध्येंहि शिजविलेल्या अन्नास खरकटेंच म्हणतात .

which has such food or flour adhering to it, or lying in or on it, or which has been touched by it. खरकटा food is appropriate to सोवळा Bráhmans, and would be polluted by the touch of a Bráhman in the ओवळा state. Dressed food, however, is ख0 amongst Shúdras, with whom the distinction of सोवळा & ओवळा does not obtain.
