व्रत f. n. (ifc. f(आ). ; fr. √ 2.वृ) will, command, law, ordinance, rule, [RV.] obedience, service, ib.; [AV.] ; [ĀśvGṛ.] dominion, realm, [RV.] शुचि-व्र्° sphere of action, function, mode or, manner of life (e.g. , ‘pure manner of life’ [Śak.] ), conduct, manner, usage, custom, [RV.] &c. &c. व्रतं-√ चर् a religious vow or practice, any pious observance, meritorious act of devotion or austerity, solemn vow, rule, holy practice (as fasting, continence &c.; , ‘to observe a vow’, esp. ‘to practise chastity’), ib. व्रतात् any vow or firm purpose, resolve to (dat. loc. , or comp. ; or व्रत-वशात्, ‘in consequence of a vow’; cf. असि-धारा-व्रत and आसिधारं व्रतम्), [MBh.] ; [Kāv.] &c. मधु-व्र्° the practice of always eating the same food (cf. ), [L.] the feeding only on milk (as a fast or observance according to rule; also the milk itself), [VS.] ; [Br.] ; KātyŚr. अ-याचित-व्र्° any food (in q.v. ) महा-व्रत = (i.e. a partic. स्तोत्र, and the day for it), [Br.] ; [ŚrS.] ; (with gen. or ifc. ) N. of सामन्s, [ĀrṣBr.] ([L.] also ‘month’; season; year; fire; ‘= विष्णु’; ‘N. of one of the seven islands of अन्तर-द्वीप’) व्रत m. m.
