A formation of a highly expressive nature and of a very large class; e. g. सदसत्, शब्दाशब्द, वेळावेळ, सव्यापसव्य, बरा वाईट &c. The literal sense is Well-spoken or said, or ill-spoken or said; and the use is as per ex. मजपासून कांहीं सु0 घडलें तर क्षमा करावी, i. e. If I have said anything without due consideration of its quality as proper or improper, as good or bad, pardon it; pardon my rash sayings whether passable or in whatever degree faulty; चौघांमध्यें सु0 बोलूं नये समजून बोलावें Speak not unadvisedly in public; speak with consideration and care; मी त्याला सु0 कांहीं बोललों नाहीं I spake not a syllable to him good or bad. Note. As the derivation, and thus the exact and rigid signification, of this word are, to the multitude, unknown, they are, as is usual and natural, constantly violated in the current applications. The word imports, in the popular apprehension, simply Good or bad, well or ill, and, accordingly, if, of the first example given above the rendering be If I have done &c., and if, for the verb बोलणें in the two other examples, the verb करणें be substituted, the rendering will, in that apprehension, be equally correct, and the import, although altered, equally congruous.
