स्म n. ind.स्मा, (or
ष्म,
ष्मा) a particle perhaps originally equivalent to ‘ever’, ‘always’
ह and later to ‘indeed’, ‘certainly’, ‘verily’, ‘surely’ (it is often used pleonastically, and in earlier language generally follows a similar particle [
esp. ,
न], or relative, or
prep. or verb, while in later language it frequently follows
इति,
न and
ना॑ [
cf. 1.मा॑]; it is also joined with a
pres. tense or
pres. participle to give them a past sense [
e.g. प्रविशन्ति स्म, ‘they entered’]; this use of
स्म is also found in the
ब्राह्मणs and is extended to
वेद and
आहcf. [Vām. v, 2, 46] ),
