In rhetoric. A trope or verbal figure. Of such five are specified; viz. वक्रोक्ति, अनुप्रास, यमक, श्लेष, पुनरुक्तवदाभास. वक्रोक्ति has three varieties; viz. सभंगश्लेषवक्रोक्ति, अभंगश्लेष- वक्रोक्ति, काकुवक्रोक्ति; but of each of the five there are varieties and distinctions and subdistinctions. शब्दालंकार m. m. embellishment of the sound (of a sentence by rhyme. alliteration &c., as
opp. to अर्था-ल्°q.v. ), a figure of speech depending for its pleasingness on sound or words (such as the यमक and अनुप्रा-स, q.v. )

noun काव्य में वह अलंकार जिसमें प्रयुक्त होने वाले शब्द से ही चमत्कार उत्पन्न हो, उसके स्थान पर उसका पर्याय रखने से वह चमत्कार न हो
Ex. अलंकार के दो भेद होते हैं,शब्दालंकार और अर्थालंकार ।
