AVIKṢIT I   A famous King. The son of Karandhama and father of Marutta. He was honoured even by Bṛhaspati, having performed a hundred horse sacrifices. Mention is made in the [Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa] that Avikṣit had seven wives: Varā, Gaurī, Subhadrā, Līlāvatī, Vibhā, Maṅgavatī, and Kumudvatī. Besides them Vai- śālinī the princess of Viśālā also was his wife. He had taken this Vaiśālinī from her Svayaṁvara dais (the bride herself selecting a husband from those who are present), defeating the Kings who were present there. Those defeated Kings, later, joined together and defeated Avikṣit and took him a prisoner. Finally Karandhama rescued him. His greatness is described as follows: “The righteous man Avikṣit is equal to Indra in prowess. This austere and righteous man has become a great sacrificer. In brightness he is equal to the Sun, as forgiving as the earth, in intelligence equal to Bṛhaspati and as firm as the Himālayas. By his thought, word, and deed and self control and noble actions he kept his subjects in peace and prosperity.” [Bhāṣā Bhārata, Aśvamedha Parva, Chapter 4, Stanzas 19-21] .
AVIKṢIT II   Five sons were born to King Kuru by his wife Vāhinī. Avikṣit was one of them. [See the word Vaṁśāvalī (Genealogy)].

अविक्षित् n.  (सू. दिष्ट.) करंधमपुत्र (आविक्षित) इसने सौ अश्वमेध किये तथा स्वयं बृहस्पती ने इसका याजन किया । इसको स्वयंवर से प्राप्त हेमधर्मकन्या वरा, सुदेवकन्या गौरी, बलिकन्या सुभद्रा, वीरकन्या लीलावती, वीरभद्रकन्या विभा, भीमकन्या मान्यवती तथा दंभकन्या कुमुद्वती नामक पत्नियॉं थी [मार्क. ११९.१६-१७] । विशाल की कन्या वैशालिनी भी इसकी पत्नी थी । इसने वैशालिनी के स्वयंवर में अन्य राजाओं का पराभव किया, तथा वैशालिनी को ले कर यह चला गया । पश्चात् अन्य राजाओं ने मिल कर इसका पराजय कर के, इसको बंदीवान कर दिया । अन्त में इसका पिता करंधम ने सबका पराजय कर के, इसको मुक्त किया, तथा इसका वैशालिनी के साथ विवाह हुआ । इसका पुत्र मरुत्त [म. आश्व.४] । सर्पो ने कई ऋषिपुत्रों को मार डाला तब मरुत्त सर्प-संहार के लिये उद्युक्त हुआ । इस समय इसने अपने पत्नी के साथ वहॉं जा कर, पुत्र को इस कार्य से निवृत्त किया । सर्पो को बचा कर अभय दिया सर्पो ने भी उन मृत ऋषिपुत्रों को पुनः जीवित किया [मार्क. ११९.१६-१७,१२८] ।
अविक्षित् II. n.  (सो.) कुरुपुत्र । इसकी माता का नाम वाहिनी । इसे आठ पुत्र थे । वे इस प्रकार है- १. परीक्षित् (अश्ववत्), २. शबलाश्व, ३. अभिराज, ४. विराज, ५. शल्मल, ६. उच्चैःश्रवस, ७. भद्रकार, ८. जितारि [म.आ.८९.४५-४६] । इसके अश्ववान् तथा अभिष्वत नाम भी प्रसिद्ध हैं (कुरु देखिये) ।
