YĀYĀVARA(S)   A particular section of Brahmins. Their special feature is that they wander about here and there, following the course of life of the sages. [Mahābhārata, Ādi Parva, Chapter 13] , mentions that the reputed sage Jaratkāru was a Yāyāvara.

यायावर n.  एक व्यक्ति, जिसका कोई निश्चित आवास न था [तै. सं. ५.२.१.७] ; [का. सं. १९.१२] । ‘यायावर’ का शब्दश: अर्थ ‘इधर उधर घूमनेवाला’ होता है ।
यायावर II. n.  संन्यासियों का एक समूह, जो मुनिवृत्ति से कठोर व्रत पालन करते हुये इधर उधर घूमते रहते थे । जरत्कारु नामक सुविख्यात ऋषि इनमें से हि एक था [म. आ. १३.०-१३] । इस ऋषि के धार्मिकता का निर्देश महाभारत में प्राप्त है [म. अनु. १४२] । महाभारत में अन्यत्र जरत्कारु ऋषि के पितृगण का नाम ‘यायावर’ वताया गया हैण । उन्हें कोई संतान न होने के कारण, वे स्वर्ग से च्युत हो गये थे । अतएव पुन: स्वर्गप्राप्ति होनेके लिए, इन्होंने जरत्कारु ऋषि से, विवाह कर पुत्रप्राप्ति करने की प्रार्थना की थी [म. आ. १३.१४-१६, ४१.१६-१७] ।
