स्म  n.  ind. स्मा, (or ष्म, ष्मा) a particle perhaps originally equivalent to ‘ever’, ‘always’
ह   and later to ‘indeed’, ‘certainly’, ‘verily’, ‘surely’ (it is often used pleonastically, and in earlier language generally follows a similar particle [ esp., न], or relative, or prep. or verb, while in later language it frequently follows इति, न and ना॑ [ cf. 1. मा॑]; it is also joined with a pres. tense or pres. participle to give them a past sense [ e.g. प्रविशन्ति स्म, ‘they entered’]; this use of स्म is also found in the ब्राह्मणs and is extended to वेद and आह cf. [Vām. v, 2, 46]), [RV.]; &c.

स्म [sma]   ind.
   A particle added to the present tense of verbs (or to present participles) and giving them the sense of the past tense; भासुरको नाम सिंहः प्रतिवसति स्म [Pt.1;] क्रीणन्ति स्म प्राणमूल्यैर्यशांसि [Śi.18.15.]
   A pleonastic particle (generally added to the prohibitive particle मा q. v.); भर्तुर्विप्रकृतापि रोषणतया मास्म प्रतीपं गमः [Ś.4.18;] मास्म सीमन्तिनी काचिज्जनयेत् पुत्रमीदृशम् [H.2.7.]
   A particle giving a sense of 'ever', 'always' or 'indeed', 'verily' and like; उवाच विप्राः प्रतिनन्द्य पार्थिवं मुदा मुनीनां सदसि स्म शृण्वताम् [Bhāg.8.1.33.]

स्म   Ind.
   1. An expletive.
   2. A particle which added to verbs in the present tense gives them a past sense, as हन्तिस्म रावणं रामः RĀMA killed (instead of kills) RĀVAṆA. It is often added to the prohibitive particle मा and used with the aorist or imperfect.
    E. षो to end or destroy ङ्म aff.; or ष्मिङ् to smile, aff. ड .
