GOTAMA   A sage named Gotama, son of Rahūgaṇa, is found everywhere in Ṛgveda. The seventyfourth sūkta in the thirteenth anuvāka of the first maṇḍala of Ṛgveda is composed by this sage. There are many other sūktas also in his name. This sage is not the Gautama, husband of Ahalyā, who made [Sūkta 58, Anuvaka 11, Maṇḍala 1 of Ṛgveda] . Once this Gotama tired of thirst asked the Maruts for some water. The Maruts took a huge well to his side and poured water into a big pot. [Sūktas 86, 87, Anuvāka 14, Maṇḍala 1, Ṛgveda] . It was Aśvinīdevas who took the well to Gotama. [Sūkta 116, Anuvaka 17, Maṇḍala 1, Ṛgveda] .

गोतम n.  कश्यपकुलोत्पन्न एक ऋषि [भवि. प्रति. ४.२१] ।
गोतम (राहूगण) n.  एक ऋषि । ऋग्वेद में इसके बहुत सूक्त हैं [ऋ. १.७४-९३,९.३१, ६७.७-९, १०. १३७.३] । इसका अनेक स्थानों पर उल्लेख है [ऋ. १.६२.१३, ७८.२, २, ५] । अंगिरस् से इसका बार बार संबंध आता है [ऋ.१.६२.१,७१.२] । इसका राहूगण यह पैतृक नाम ऋग्वेद एवं अन्यत्र भी मिलता है [ऋ.१.७८.५] ; [श. ब्रा.१.४.१.१०, ११.४.३.२०] । यह माथव विदेह का पुरोहित था [श. ब्रा.१.४.१.१०] । वैदेह जनक तथा याज्ञवल्क्य का यह समकालीन था । एक स्तोम का यह कर्ता है [श. ब्रा.१३.५.१.१] ; [आश्व. श्रौ. ९.५.६] । अन्यत्र भी इसका उल्लेख है [अ.वे.४. २९.६, १८.३.१६] ; [बृ. उ.२.२.६] । इसे वामदेव तथा नोधस् नामक दो पुत्र थे [आश्व. श्रौ. १२.१०] । इसका भद्र नामक एक साम है । इस साम के फलस्वरुप गौतम को श्रेष्ठपद प्राप्त हुआ । इसी कारण, इसके पहले के तथा बाद के लोग गोतम नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुएँ [पं.ब्रा.१३.१२.६-८] । इसका गोतम नामक भी एक साम है [पं. ब्रा.१२.३.१४] ।
