NAMUCI I   A fierce Rākṣasa (giant). It is stated in [Mahābhārata, Ādi Parva, Chapter 65, Stanza 22] , that this giant was the son of Prajāpati Kaśyapa by his wife Danu. This fierce giant was killed by Indra. There is a story in the Purāṇas describing how Namuci was killed. Under the leadership of Namuci a great army of the giants invaded the realm of the gods. Indra came with an army of devas. Though the giants were defeated in the battle Indra was not able to kill Namuci. To save himself from the attack of Indra, Namuci got into the radiance of the Sun and hid himself there. Indra found him out and made a treaty with him, the conditions of which were as said by Indra:-- “Oh, noble giant, I will not kill you by wet thing or dry thing, in the night or in the day. What I say is true.” According to this treaty it became impossible for Indra to kill Namuci either with wet things or with dry things and either in the day time or in the night. Only when Indra had agreed to these conditions did Namuci come out. The battle continued and Indra drove away Śumbha and Niśumbha the elder brothers of Namuci, who went to Pātāla. Indra ran after Namuci and in the evening Indra found him hiding on the sea shore and killed him with the foam of the sea. As Indra had violated the condition of the treaty the severed head of Namuci followed Indra. With this Indra incurred the sin of Brahmahatyā (killing a Brahmin). To get remission from this sin Indra approached Brahmā. He was advised to bathe in Aruṇāsaṅgama and doing so Indra got remission of his sin. From that day onwards Aruṇāsaṅgama became a holy bath (tīrtha). [M.B. Śalya Parva, Chapter 40] .
NAMUCI II   An army-captain of Hiraṇyākṣa. In the battle with Indra, Namuci made him unconscious and the elephant Airāvata thrust its tusks on the ground. After that by his magic and sorcery he created many creatures. But Viṣṇu destroyed all those creatures with his discus Sudarśana. At last Indra killed Namuci. [Padma Purāṇa, Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa] .
NAMUCI III   Another valiant captain of Hiraṇyākṣa. He sent five arrows against Indra in a fierce battle. But Indra cut all the five arrows in the midway. Then by his magic and sorcery Namuci spread darkness everywhere. Indra defeated that strategy also. Then Namuci dashed forward and taking hold of the tusks of Airāvata shook Indra down. Indra stood up and cut off the head of Namuci with his sword. [Padma Purāṇa, Sṛṣṭi Khaṇḍa] .

नमुचि n.  इंद्र का शत्रु एक राक्षस । समुद्र के ‘फेन’ (फेंस) के द्वारा इंद्र ने इसका वध किया । पौराणिक नृसिंह अवतार की कल्पना का मूल, इंद्र एवं नमुचि के युद्ध में ही है [ऋ.८.१४.१३] । समुद्र के फेंस के द्वारा इसकी मृत्यु होने का कथाभाग, कुछ रुपकात्मक प्रतीत होता है । पं. सातवलेकरजी के मत में, यह समुद्र के फेंस से ठीक होनेवाला कोई रोग होगा । महाभारत में, नमुचि को कश्यप एवं दनु का पुत्र कहा गया है [म.आ.५९.२२] । हिरण्यकशिपु ने देवों पर आक्रमण किया एवं उनका पराभव पर दिया । इस युद्ध में, नमुचि हिरण्यकशिपु राक्षस का सेनापति था [म.स.परि.१. क्र.२१ पंक्ति. ३५८] । यह वृत्र का अनुयायी था [भा.६.१०.१९] । स्वर्भानुकन्या सुप्रभा इसकी भार्या थी [भा.६.६.३२] । एक बार भयभीत हो कर, यह सूर्यकिरण में प्रविष्ट हुआ तथा इसने इन्द्र से मैत्री की । उसे समय इंद्र ने इससे बहुत सारें विषयों पर चर्चा की । संकट के कारण उत्पन्न होनेवाला दुख भगवत्-चिंतन से किस प्रकार दूर हो जाता है, इस विषय पर दोनों का संभाषण हुआ [म.शां.२१९] । फिर इसके वाक्पटुत्व एवं विद्वत्ता के कारण, प्रसन्न हो कर इंद्र ने इसे वरप्रदान किया, ‘तुम आर्द्र अथवा सूखें किसी भी शस्त्र से मृत न होगे’। परंतु बाद में इंद्र ने सागरजल के फेन से इसका शिरच्छेद किया, तब उसके केवल सिर ने ही इंद्र का पीछा किया [म.श.४२.३२] । पश्चात् ब्रह्मदेव के कहने पर, नमुचि ने जिस तीर्थ में गुप्त रुप से स्नान किया था, उसी ‘अरुणासंगम’ नामक तीर्थ में इंद्र ने स्नान किया । फिर इंद्र के पीछे पीछे नमुचि का सिर भी उस तीर्थ में आ गिरा । उस स्नान के कारण, नमुचि को समस्तक सद्नति मिली, एवं इच्छित अक्षय लोक उसे प्राप्त हुआ [म.शं.४२.२९-३२] । वामनावतार में, वामन स्वरुप विष्णु ने बलि के साथ नमुचि को भी पाताल में गाड रखा था [म.स.परि.१.क्र.२१. पंक्ति.३५८-३५९] ।
नमुचि II. n.  हिरण्याक्ष का सेनापति । इंद्र को मूर्च्छित कर इसने ऐरावत को नीचे गिराया, तथा माया से अनेक जंतु उत्पन्न किये । वे जंतु विष्णु ने अपने चक्र से नष्ट किये । पश्चात् इंद्र ने वज्र से इसका वध किया [पद्म. सृ.६५] ।
नमुचि III. n.  हिरण्याक्ष एक और सेनापति । इंद्र पर इसने पॉंच बाण छोडे । परंतु इंद्र ने उन्हें बीच में ही तोड दिया । बाद में इसने अपनी माया से अंधकार उत्पन्न किया । परंतु अपने एक अस्त्र के द्वारा, इंद्र ने उस अंधकार को नष्ट किया । बाद में इंद्र के समीप आ कर, इसने उसके ऐरावत हाथी के दॉंत पकडे एवं इंद्र को नीचे गिरा दिया । परंतु उस काम में उसे मग्न देख कर, इंद्र ने अपने खड्‌ग से इसका सिर काट दिया [पद्म. सृ.६९] ।
नमुचि IV. n.  तेरह सैंहिकियों में से एक । विप्रचित्ति एवं सिंहिका का यह पुत्र था । परशुराम ने इसका वध किया [पद्म.सृ.६७] ।

 N. N. of a demon slain by Indra; वनमुचे नमुचेररये शिरः [R.9.22.] [When Indra conquered the Asuras, there was only one called Namuchi who strongly resisted and at last captured him. He offered to let Indra go provided he promised 'not to kill by day or by night, with wet or dry'. Indra promised to do so and was released, but he cut off Namuchi's head at twilight and with foam of water (which is neither wet nor dry). According to another version Namuchi was a friend of Indra, and once drank up his strength and made him quite imbecile. The Aśvins (and Sarasvatī also, as the story goes) then supplied Indra with a Vajra with which he cut off the demon's head].
