Pass.-तप्यते (ep. also °ति), to be oppressed or afflicted, suffer pain, undergo penance (3. sg.impers. with gen. of pers.), [ŚBr.] &c. &c.:
Caus.-तापयति (Pass.-ताप्यते), to cause to be heated, make very hot, burn, inflame, scorch, [Kauś.] ; [MBh.] &c.;
to pair by heat, torture, torment (आत्मानम्, ‘one's self. i.e. to afflict the body by austerities’), afflict, trouble, distress, [MBh.] ; [Kāv. &c.]

   To heat, warm; संतप्तचामीकर [Bk.3.3;] संत्तप्तायसि संस्थितस्य पयसो नामापि न ज्ञायते [Bh.2.67.]
   To parch, dry up.
   To pain by heat, torture. -Pass.
   To become hot or heated.
   To be distressed, suffer pain, be sorry; संतप्तानां त्वमसि शरणम् Me.7 'of the afflicted'; दिवापि मयि निष्कान्ते संतप्येते गुरू मम Mb.; [Bh.2.87.]
   To repent, be stung with remorse; अवधूतप्रणिपाताः पश्चात् संतप्यमानमनसोऽपि [V.3.5.]
   To undergo penance. -Caus.
   To heat, burn, inflame.
   To provoke, exasperate, irritate.
   To torment, torture, distress, afflict.
   To burn up, consume.
   To foment (quarrels &c.).
