PŪRAṆA   An ancient sage. He was one among the ṛṣis who visited Bhīṣma lying on his bed of arrows. [Śloka 12, Chapter 47 Śānti Parva] .

पूरण (वैश्वामित्र) n.  विश्वामित्रकुल का एक गोत्रकार, सुक्तकार तथा प्रव [ऋ.१०.१६०] । इसे ‘पुराण’ नामान्तर भी प्राप्त था । महाभारत में एक ऋषि के रुप में इसका निर्देश प्राप्त है [म.शां.४७.६६, पंक्ति ११] । किन्तु वहॉं इसके नाम का निर्देश ‘पूरण’ नाम से किया गया है’ पर वहॉं इसकी ‘वैश्वामित्र’ उपाधि का कोई भी उल्लेख प्राप्त नहीं है ।
