To COMPEL ,
v. a. Expressed by the causal form, usually in conjunction with the adverb
बलात् or
बलेन; as,
‘the king should compel him to pay,’
तं राजा बलाद् दापयेत्; ‘he com- pels the Brahmans to perform the sacrifice,’
ब्राह्मणान् यज्ञंकारयति. The root
अर्ह् (c. 1.
अर्हति -र्हितुं) has sometimes the sense of
‘being compelled’; as,
‘he is compelled to pay,’
दातुम् अर्हति. In modern Sanskrit such expressions as the following are found;
‘They compelled him to bear a burden,
भारं वोढुं तं बलाद् दध्रुः (root
धृ); ‘Compel the people to come,’
लोकान् आगन्तुं प्रवर्त्तय.
