एन 1 a pronom. base (used for certain cases of the 3rd personal pronoun, thus in the acc. sing. du. pl. [ एनम्, एनाम्, एनद्, &c.], inst. sing. [ एनेन, एनया] gen. loc. du. [ एनयोस्, Ved. एनोस्]; the other cases are formed fr. the pronom. base अ See under इदम्), he, she, it एनम् पुरुषम् this, that, (this pronoun is enclitic and cannot begin a sentence; it is generally used alone, so that , ‘that man’, would be very unusual if not incorrect. Grammarians assert that the substitution of एनम् &c. for इमम् or एतम् &c. takes place when something is referred to which has already been mentioned in a previous part of the sentence; See Gr. 223 and 836) एन [ cf. Gk. ἕν, οἷος; Goth. ains; Old Pruss. ains; Lat. oinos, unus.] एन 2. and एना, Ved. instr. of इदम्q.v. एन 3. ( cf. एण), a stag. See अन्-एन.
