   वाजवीपेक्षां अधिक विस्तार ; फाजील गोष्टींचा समावेश ; मर्यादेचें उल्लंघन ; अतिविस्तृतता .
   ( न्याय ) अलक्ष्यांवर लक्षणाची व्याप्ति ; व्याख्येय जातीमध्यें ज्या ज्या वस्तूंचा समावेश व्हावा अशी इच्छा असते त्यांखेरीज एखाद्या निराळ्या वस्तूचा समावेश होतो असें दिसेल तर त्या व्याख्येमध्यें अतिव्याप्ति हा दोष आहे असें म्हणतात . उ० पदार्थांची देवघेव करण्याच्या साधनास नाणीं म्हणतात , अशी नाण्याची व्याख्या केल्यास बायका वोहर्‍यापासून भांडीं घेऊन त्यांबद्दल त्यास जीं फाटकीं चुरगुटें देतात त्यांसहि नाणें म्हणावें लागेल ; म्हणून वरील व्याख्येंत अतिव्याप्ति हा दोष आहे . - सुकौ ४१ . अतिव्याप्तिः [ativyāptiḥ]  f. f.
   An unwarrantable stretch of a rule or principle.
    including what is not intended to be included in a proposition; (in [Nyāya] ) including or covering too much, unwarranted extension of a definition to things not intended to be defined by it, so that it includes such things as ought not to fall under it; one of the three faults to which a definition is open; अलक्ष्ये लक्षणगमनम् अतिव्याप्तिः; यथा मनुष्यो ब्राह्मणः इति लक्षणस्य शूद्रेऽतिव्याप्तिः, तस्यापि मनुष्यत्वात्.
