MLECCHA   A tribe of people of ancient india. this tribe was born from the tail of the celestial cow Nandinī, kept by Vasiṣṭha for sacrificial purposes when there was a fight between Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha. Mahābhārata gives the following information regarding them.
(1) The mlecchas who sprang up from the tail of the celestial cow Nandinī sent the army of Viśvāmitra flying in terror. [Śloka 38, Chapter 174, Ādi Parva] .
(2) Bhīmasena defeated the mlecchas living in the coastal regions and took from them several valuable diamonds as tax. [Śloka 25, Chapter 30, Sabhā Parva] .
(3) The mlecchas living in the coastal area were once defeated by Sahadeva, one of the Pāṇḍavas. [Śloka 66, Chapter 31, Sabhā Parva] .
(4) Nakula also once defeated the mlecchas. [Śloka 16, Chapter 32, Sabhā Parva] .
(5) Bhagadatta was the king of the mlecchas. [Śloka 14, Chapter 51, Sabhā Parva] .
(6) Bhagadatta accompanied by the mlecchas living on the coasts attended the Rājasūya of Yudhiṣṭhira. [Śloka 14, Chapter 51, Sabhā Parva] .
(7) different tribes of mlecchas will be born on earth at the beginning of the era of Pralaya. [Śloka 34, Chapter 188, Vana Parva] .
(8) Kalkī, the incarnation of Viṣṇu, will destroy the mlecchas who are found everywhere in the world. [Śloka 97 Chapter 190, Vana Parva] .
(9) Karṇa during his world campaign conquered many mleccha countries. [Śloka 19, Chapter 254, Vana Parva] .

म्लेच्छ n.   एक जातिविशेष, जो नन्दिनी गौ के फेन से उत्पन्न हुयी थी । महाभारत में इनका वर्णन ‘ मुण्ड’, ‘ अर्धमुण्ड’, ‘ जटिल’, एवं ‘जटिलानन’ शब्दों में किया गया है [म.द्रो.६८.४४] । सर्वप्रथम ये लोग भारत के उत्तर- पश्चिमी सीमा प्रदेश में रहते थे । किन्तु धर्म से भ्रष्ट हुए सारी जातियों को ‘म्लेच्छ’ सामान्य नाम मनुस्मृति के काल में दिये जाने लगा ।
म्लेच्छ n.   शतपथ ब्राह्मण में म्लेच्छ भाषा का निर्देश प्राप्त है, जहॉं उसे अनार्य लोगों की बर्बर भाषा कहा गया है [शा.ब्रा.३.२.१.२४] ।
म्लेच्छ n.   युधिष्ठिर के राजसूय यज्ञ में, म्लेच्छों का राजा भगदत्त समुद्रतटवर्ति म्लेच्छ लोगों के साथ उपस्थित हुआ था [म.स.३१.१०] । महाभारत में सर्वत्र इन्हें नीच एवं धर्मभ्रष्ट माना गया है । प्रलय के पहले पृथ्वी पर म्लेच्छों का राज्य होने की, एवं विष्णुयशस् कल्कि के द्वारा इनका संहार होने की भविष्यवाणी वहॉं दी गयी है [म.व.१८८.२९-८९] । युधिष्ठिर के अश्वमेध यज्ञ में, ब्राह्मणों को देने के बाद जो धन बचा हुआ था, वह शूद्र एवं म्लेच्छ लोगों ने उठा लिया [म.आश्व.९१.२५] । युधिष्ठिर के राजसूय यज्ञ के समय, भीमसेन ने अपने पूर्व- दिग्विजय में समुद्रतट पर रहनेवाले म्लेच्छ लोगों को जीता था, एवं उन से मणि, रत्न, सुवर्ण, रजत, चंदन आदि भेंटवस्तुएँ प्रात की थी [म.स.२७.२५-२६] । सहदेव ने अपनी दक्षिण दिग्विजय में, एवं नकुल ने अपनी पश्चिम दिग्विजय में, इन लोगों पर विजय प्राप्त की थी [म.स.२८.४४, २९.१५] । युधिष्ठिर के अश्वमेध यज्ञ के समय भी, अर्जुन ने इन्हे जीता था । इससे प्रतीत होता है कि, महाभारतकाल में इन लोगों के उपनिवेश पश्चिम, पूर्व एवं दक्षिण भार्त में समुद्र के तट पर भी थे । भारतीय युद्ध में ये लोग कौरवपक्ष में शामिल थे । इस युद्ध में, इन्होंने पाण्डवसेना पर क्रोधी गजराज छोड दिये थे [म.क.१७.९] । किन्तु अर्जुन ने समस्त ‘जटिलानन’ म्लेच्छों का संहार किया [म.द्रो.६८.४२] । यादवराजा सात्यकि ने भी इनका संहार किया था [म.द्रो.९५.३६] । इनके अंग नामक राजा का वध नकुल के द्वारा हुआ था --- 10--- ।
