demand that he should. But as soon as he secures his object,

he will turn ungrateful, and spurn the ladder which enabled
him to reach his high position.

Vs. 77.-बिसृज्यते-Is avoided.
शीलं येपां तै:-Phose who fear danger. आशीर्षिषः- आशिवि विषं यस्य

Vs, 78.-Thie stanza is a good illustration of aiaa, for
the same details are open to two different interpretations, one
of them being technical. First we take the ordinary meanings :
परार्थव्यासङ्ग-परस्मै अबं परार्थश्चासी व्यासङ्गः. Work for the sake of

to abandon. The first pāda means : He who overlocks his own
interests and works for the welfare of others. Bhartrhari
would agree with Jagannātha in calling such a man a H anak
. एते सत्पुरुषाः परार्थवटकाः स्वार्थीन्परित्यज्य ये । Bhart. I. अभेदैकरवन्द - न विद्यते
भेदः यस्मिन् तत्, तथाभूतें एकत्वम्. Unity which knows no difference.
Phenomenal plurality is a matter of experience, yet the wise
man recognizes the tundamental unity of all. Of. aa a-
दुकात्मनोऽनन्यत्वेऽपि तद्विकाराणां केनवीचितरङ्गबुद्बुदादीनामितरेतरविभाग इतरेतर-
भैश्ठेषादिलक्षणश्च व्यवहारउपलब्यने । न च समुद्रादुकात्मनोऽनन्यत्वे पि तद्विकाराणां
फेननरङ्गादीनाभितरेनरभावापत्तिर्भवाति । नच तेषामितरेतरभावानापत्तावपि समुद्रा-
त्मनोऽन्यत्वं भवाति : Sankara Bhasya৪ 0n B. s. 2. 1. 18, गुणभूतेषु-
